چکیده

The ionic requirements for the generation of action potentials in the ventral longitudinal muscle fibres of the stick insect, Carausius morosus, were investigated. Ca-free Ringer rapidly and reversibly abolished the action potential. In the presence of tetraethylammonium (TEA) ions (to suppress outward currents) the overshoot of the action potential changed 26 mV for a 10-fold change in [Ca]0. The maximum rate of rise of the action potential (measured in TEA Ringer) showed saturation at high [Ca]0. Cobaltous ions (20 HIM) and the organic Ca antagonist D 600 (5 x io" g/ml) reversibly inhibited the action potential; the inhibitory effect of 1 mM-La was irreversible. Barium and strontium, but not magnesium, were able to substitute for calcium as charge carriers. These results suggest that an inward movement of Ca underlies the action potential of Carausius fibres.

Identification of multiple peptides homologous to cockroach and cricket allatostatins in the stick insect Carausius morosus.

Eighteen peptides were isolated from brain extracts of the stick insect Carausius morosus. The peptides were purified in four steps by high-performance liquid chromatography, monitored by their ability to inhibit juvenile hormone biosynthesis by corpora allata of the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus in vitro, and chemically characterised by Edman degradation and mass spectrometry. We obtained comple...

Hormonal control of the malpighian tubules of the stick insect, Carausius morosus.

Factors have been isolated from the central nervous system of the stick insect, Carausius morosus, which affect the rate of secretion of the Malpighian tubules (Gersch et al. i960; Unger, 1965; Vietinghoff, 1967), but it has not yet been shown that these factors are of physiological importance in vivo. There is, however, an accumulation of stainable material in the corpora cardiaca of Carausius...

Carotenoid Biogenesis in the Stick Insect, Carausius morosus, during a Larval Instar

Carotenoids, Metabolism, [14C]/?-Carotene, Insects, Carausius morosus [14C]/?-Carotene was fed to juvenile stick insects, Carausius morosus, o f the fifth instar. Radio activity was incorporated into 2-hydroxy-, 2-oxo-, and 3,4-didehydro-2-oxo-carotenoids of the ß,ß-type. These transformations are due to the insect’s own capacity; any contribution by microbial symbionts can be ruled out. A stu...

The extensor tibiae muscle of the stick insect: biomechanical properties of an insect walking leg muscle.

We investigated the properties of the extensor tibiae muscle of the stick insect (Carausius morosus) middle leg. Muscle geometry of the middle leg was compared to that of the front and hind legs and to the flexor tibiae, respectively. The mean length of the extensor tibiae fibres is 1.41+/-0.23 mm and flexor fibres are 2.11+/-0.30 mm long. The change of fibre length with joint angle was measure...
